I wish you all a relaxing July 4th holiday! Summer is upon us and, with that, lots of visitors and events. As temperatures rise, please remain conscious of fire risks. And, don’t miss the Wheeler Community Picnic Saturday, July 6, from 4 pm to 6 pm, at Upper Park!
Preparedness is the focus of the Picnic, but it also includes food, a raffle and mingling with neighbors.
The City of Wheeler’s emergency preparedness program designates seven neighborhood assembly sites, where people will gather in a community emergency. Each assembly site has a volunteer steward, who houses tools and supplies for setting up a neighborhood outpost: basic shelter, first aid supplies, communications tools and a water filtration system.
At the sites, neighbors and visitors can communicate needs, gather information, receive basic first aid and relay neighborhood statuses to the city’s command center. Wheeler also has a trailer containing extensive emergency aid supplies, which can move through the city to reach those in need.
Check the below map, so you know where to go in an emergency. Each site is marked with an A. Our multiple sites ensure that, if one is inaccessible – due to a flood or landslide – you can still get care, supplies and information at another site. At the Picnic, you can view a blue barrel, suggest additions and get ideas for preparing your own family.
City supplies are no substitute for creating your own disaster kit and Go Bag of essentials, readily available in your house and car. You can find suggested contents and more at evcnb.org.
The sites and barrels are the result of three years of effort and coordination by our hardworking Wheeler Emergency Team volunteers! Please write or call with any questions.
