Public Works

Streets

Wheeler’s Public Works Department maintains approximately 10 miles of streets within the City.  In 2020, they paved the length of Gregory Street and Cedar Streets and Rorvik Street to 1st.  The department has the equipment to repair potholes, maintain rights-of-way, apply sand during freezing weather, and semi-grade unpaved streets.  The Public Works Department can correct normal street wear & tear, but contracts out large jobs.  We also maintain the majority of the city street and parking lot paint striping, which the department performs annually.  The striping task is usually performed around the city-sponsored Spring Cleanup Day in May, and as needed .  The department also has the equipment to sweep and clean the city’s curbed streets, which it performs as needed.

Staff are also working on protecting and stabilizing Hemlock Street, pictured below.

Water

Wheeler's water system consists of a well site and treatment system -- located off Foss Road -- and the city’s distribution system. The distribution system is made up of two 350,000 gallon storage reservoirs, a booster pump station, and associated piping, valves, and meters. The city monitors and operates the system, using a computer located at city hall. The city's 242 water services supply water to approximately 450 people. Normal water usage can vary from one to three million gallons per month. Drinking water is tested every month for safety and regulatory compliance.  Wheeler has some of the finest drinking water on the coast!  See the details in our Drinking Water Quality Reports.
